Home-based business opportunities have mostly centered on direct selling. This terms was conceptualized by people working from home, selling products to others, usually by visiting someone else's home.
In the 1970's, when the doorbell rang, people would say "It's the Avon lady". From Tupperware to AMWAY, direct selling or "word of mouth" sales has been around for a generation or three.
Around the turn of the century, the world-wide-web blossomed into the "Internet" and entire generation went online to do their word of mouth direct selling. However, over the course of the last 2 decades, the internet and the creation of social media has been both good and bad (mostly bad) for direct selling.
Gone are the days of home parties and doorbell ringing, and so is the old direct selling business model. In fact, especially in the US, direct selling, AKA network marketing or "MLM" has been declining both in sales and in morale.
There are many reasons for the decline, including but not limited to; too many companies and competition, too much manipulation of "downlines" and too much of a culture around "deals.
Ask almost anyone who has worked hard and had some new person be placed above them in a genealogy, how that kills their belief and momentum, you might begin to understand one of the biggest problems in multilevel marketing.
Unfortunately, today's version of direct selling is completely fragmented, and not likely to recover to the days of yesteryear, when selling products from home was revered.
The good news is that the home-based side gig economy is alive and well!
